A Guide to Color Magick

DISCLAIMER:  I know that many practitioners associate color magick with chakras, but I will not be discussing them in this post. Chakras come from Hinduism and Buddhism, and I was raised Catholic. Perhaps one day I will find a guest writer to share more information about chakras here. If you would like to be that guest writer please submit here.

Color Magick is the practice of using the metaphysical properties of colors to bring about changes. One of the easiest ways to incorporate Color Magick into your everyday life is the intentional use of color to manifest, cast, and perpetuate certain outcomes, ideas, and desires. We can do this through the jewelry/clothes we wear, through the decorations in our home, or even through makeup. Color plays a role in many magickal practices such as aura reading, chakras, and candle magick. You may find that as you switch amongst these areas you see some differing and similar meanings listed for the colors.

Color Symbolism

When looking at colors, we often already have developed ideas for what the colors symbolize. This is because in literature and other forms of media color is often used to aid in symbolism. Even at a younger age, we are told to use colors to represent emotions. For example, kids are often taught to associate yellow with happiness, red with anger, and blue with sadness. Our favorite colors and color palettes also have an impact on the way we perceive color. A practitioner will find their color magick is strongest when they carefully balance their personal associations of color with their deeper magickal meanings.

Color Magick is infused into mundane culture. We see it used as a basis for emotions in artworks. Authors use color correspondences for symbolism and foreshadowing in their novels, poetry, and other creative works. The flags that countries create use the meanings of color in their designs, as well as the LGBTQ+. Color is everywhere.

Black

I decided that black was the first color I wanted to do because I feel it is the most misunderstood one. Black is often associated with death, illness, and trauma. Inexperienced aura readers may see a black aura and automatically fear the worst for its holder, however, as someone who has had a darker aura before and is still very much alive a while after the aura dissipated, I would caution this thought. It is often rooted in racist rhetoric that exists within our craft and as a modern witch, we want to deconstruct these ideas. The color black can in fact be quite a desirable color to possess and it provides power, independence, and protection. Black is also seen as a color associated with elegance and mystery (e.g. the term black tie affair.)

White

I have always seen white as the “blank page” color. In candle magick, it can be used to replace any color you don’t have and I like to carry this belief into the everyday use of white. However, white does have some pretty common associations. White has been seen as a color linked to the divine such as your higher self, angels, or gods. Also associated with cleansing.

Brown

Brown is a color I have felt quite drawn to as of late. The Instagram associated with this blog originally used brown as the main color of our feed. The easiest way to understand brown is through its connection to the element of earth. Incorporate brown into your life when you feel a disconnect from nature. Maybe quarantine has you locked indoors or living in a city keeps you away from the forests. Brown is a useful tool for those who wish to bond with their familiars.

Yellow

Yellow is one of my two favorite colors and my bedroom’s everyday color scheme is yellow and gray. Before looking into color magick I always associated the color with sunshine and positive vibes. I am not sure if this societal conception is what made this belief carry into witchcraft or if it was witchcraft’s use of yellow that made society associate it with positivity, but that’s a chicken or the egg scenario I don’t want to get into right now. Yellow can also be used as a stimulator of the imagination and promotes growth and creativity.

Green

Green has been at the forefront of all my latest magickal workings. This is why this Christmas/Yule the use of the evergreen and the holly are much-coveted items for me. Just like brown green does create a link to nature but it also promotes financial success and luck. Add a little green in your life when you are looking for a new job or a promotion at work. Perhaps the reassurance it provides is all you need to nail the interview.

Blue

Although as I pointed out earlier blue has often been used as a color to represent sadness it actually is a color of serenity and communication in witchcraft. It connects us to the truth and promotes honesty and healing.

Indigo

Although not one of the often-discussed colors, I felt it important to discuss indigo here because it is especially important to us witches. Indigo is associated with your third eye and is seen as a color strongly linked to spiritual workings such as divination, meditation, and clair abilities.

Purple

I have been told on more than one occasion that I have a purple aura. Incorporate purple into your routine if you want to strengthen your intuition or feel a greater connection to the divine. It is also often linked to ideas of royalty and regality.

Pink

Pink’s magickal associations may come as no surprise to the reader. Pink is associated with love, but a particular type of love. Pink focuses more on the emotional and conversational aspects of love and can promote communication or healing in a relationship. Pink is also great for self-love.

Red

Red is also associated with love but rather than focusing on the emotional red is all about seduction and passion. Red is great for promoting more physical growth in your love life. Red is also great to incorporate if you want to increase your courage and confidence. Like black, it is associated with independence.

Orange

When I think of orange I always think of citrine and carnelian. Much like citrine, orange is associated with the attraction of confidence and success. In addition, it also shares Carnelian’s property of mental clarity and boosting creativity.
