Metaphysical Properties of the Solar Eclipse

partial solar eclipse.

Witches have a way of interacting with the universe and the energies it provides us with. One of the many ways it provides us with this energy is through astrological events: planetary retrogrades, lunar eclipses, planetary alignments, moon phases, and solar eclipses. With the next solar eclipse upon us, I thought it would be good to share the properties of the Metaphysical Properties of the Solar Eclipse and what a witchling may choose to do with them.

Astrology of the Eclipse

The Sun is one of the 10 planets or 2 luminaries in astrology. The Sun is the divine masculine luminary presiding over creativity, romance, lust, confidence, leisure, and leadership. It thrives when it is admired by everyone. During the Solar Eclipse, the Moon passes over the Sun, showing just how quickly the ego of the Masculine can be overtaken by the mystique of the Divine Feminine. During this time the pull of our shadow self comes into power, our subconscious mind is all-encompassing.

Although this blog post is meant to give a general overview of what you can do during a solar eclipse, there are some other things you can look at to get more particular ideas for what to do during the eclipse. Firstly, you can look at what sign we are in. For example, right now it is April 7, 2024 and we are in Aries. Aries is another fire sign, increasing the passionate and creative energy that the sun is giving off. However, unlike the Sun’s ruling sign Leo, Aries is more aggressive and assertive. This would make the time more action-oriented rather than recognition and reward-oriented.

Metaphysical Properties of the Solar Eclipse

While many factors go into the properties of a Solar Eclipse such as retrogrades, day of the week, and time of the year. Some properties are generally shared across solar eclipses.

  • Rebirth – The Solar Eclipse shows the way the sun can “die out” or be drenched in darkness. However, that light returns again, as a rebirth or a renewal.
  • Transformation – Just like Rebirth, transformation is pretty self-explanatory. The energy of transformation is reinforced by the way that the sun is blocked out in the sky.
  • Creativity – Born from the mix of passion provided by the sun and fertility provided by the moon, the solar eclipse provides a powerful amount of creative energy.
  • Shadow Self – As a time of darkness, the solar eclipse provides power for our subconscious mind.

Things to Do During A Solar Eclipse

There are a multitude of witchy ways to interact with the Solar Eclipse! Here are a few ideas to get the ball rolling.

  • Collect Solar Eclipse Water
    • Solar Eclipse Water will help you to store the energy of the solar eclipse. This is especially useful for witches who don’t always have the time to interact with an astrological event during its exact date and time.
  • Shadow Work Meditation
    • During this time there is a soft spot for introspective journeys. You can take this time to sit and write a shadow work prompt or listen to a shadow work meditation.
  • Phoenix Rituals
    • Phoenix Rituals are my favorite rituals. One of my most successful ones helped me to make a major shift in my life. I am starting to think this solar eclipse is providing a perfect excuse for another one. Phoenix rituals are rebirth rituals in which you essentially mourn and remove parts of yourself you no longer need or want to make room for new aspects and growth.
  • Reset Your Energy
    • Although it may seem risky, this is the perfect time for energy work. Some meditation, grounding, and centering rituals will go a long way during this time.
  • Astral Projection and Oneironautics
    • The movement of the planets gives our spirits the energy to travel. This means that shifting, astral projection, and dream travel are all amazing ways to use the energy you collect from this eclipse.
