Lunar Witchcraft: A Guide to the Waning Crescent

Glowing White Waning Crescent Moon

The waning crescent is the final phase of our lunar cycle. Sometimes referred to as the Balsamic moon, the waning crescent is a time of complete exhaustion. The moon phases have exasperated much of our energy and the bits we were hanging onto were expelled during the last quarter moon. We are ready to rest, unwind, and turn off our brains. Sometimes the waning crescent is only seen as the second to last phase – the last phase being the dark moon – so a practitioner may find there is still work to be done. In this case, the waning crescent would be used as an extension of the last quarter and incorporate banishing and letting go. However, this method does not give us enough time to relax.

The waning crescent is associated with the hermit in tarot. The Hermit’s key meanings are solitude, withdrawal, and spiritual awakening. During the waning crescent, you should not feel lonely but rather long for the moments alone without anyone else interfering. You may find that even though you are exhausted you feel your spirit is stronger and better than before.

What to Do?

As I’ve already stated the waning crescent may be a time of complete exhaustion. If we have given our all throughout the lunar cycle we will find ourselves low on energy, but ultimately satisfied with what we have done. If you have energy remaining you can use this time to do simple rituals involving self-love, clair strengthening, banishing, and cleansing. You can also take some time during this phase to finish off what you started during the last quarter.

During the waning crescent, one should take some time to breathe. This time is really about rebuilding your strength and recuperating from all you have done. Perhaps write down all that you have accomplished during the past month. Spiritually this time is perfect for meditation. Furthermore, I encourage you to try to avoid shadow work. Shadow work tends to drain a lot out of us, and we do not want to be all out of energy right when we are about to start our journey all over again. The waning crescent may also leave you despondent, especially if you are a glass-half-empty thinker. You may be trying to analyze everything that you didn’t get done that was on the agenda. Don’t do this. The key to continuing your moon cycle living is to focus on all you are doing.

Waning Crescent Babies

Waning Crescent babies are either the cynical sage or the old heartful soul and there is no in between. They tend to have pretty strong views on the world and on human nature, that are fed by stubbornness. At their worst waning crescent babies will focus on all the negative aspects of life and use them to create a rather bleak image of the world. Once they have gotten into this mindset it is extremely hard to pull them out of it. At their best, waning crescent babies are gifted visionaries who can map out amazing futures.

Waning Crescents are usually the ones people go to for advice to, but they can also be the ones that always put their two cents into a conversation where it was not asked for nor necessary. Their strong will, intelligence, and stubbornness make them unlikely to keep close friends. Waning Crescents tend to attach to smaller friend groups and either act as the leader or as the friend that pops up only once in a while. They do not enjoy being dependant on others and try to handle most things themselves.
